Scammed in Canada: where to report it
If you are in Canada and think you have been cheated, report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and tell your bank and your local police.
Still talking to them? Stop replying. Do not send more money, codes or passwords. If anyone is in danger, call 911.
Source: the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre report page (antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca), which names the online portal and the toll-free line. Phone hours on that page: Monday to Friday, 10 am to 4:45 pm Eastern, closed on holidays. Checked 3 October 2026.
What to do in the first hour
- Stop paying. Do not send more money or codes.
- Call your bank or card company using the number on your card or in their official app.
- Report to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online, or by phone in the hours above.
- Contact your local police. The CAFC page says local police investigate and the CAFC keeps a central record for them.
- Keep evidence. Save messages, receipts and screenshots.
If someone offers to get your money back for a fee
We cannot recover money, and we do not charge anyone. A person who contacts you offering to get lost money back, especially for an advance fee, is a common second step in scams. Report that person too.
