BIS Hallmarking Scheme ensures gold jewellery sold in India meets declared purity. A licensed Assaying & Hallmarking (A&H) centre tests purity using X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) or fire assay and laser-engraves the HUID + BIS mark on every piece.
  1. Register jewellery business at BIS portal (manakonline.in)
  2. Find nearest BIS-licensed A&H centre at bis.gov.in/hallmarking
  3. Send/bring pieces to A&H centre with details (weight, declared purity)
  4. A&H centre tests purity (XRF machine or fire assay)
  5. If purity matches: HUID is laser-engraved on piece
  6. If purity fails: piece is returned, you cannot sell it
  7. A&H charges: ₹45, ₹120 per piece depending on size
