The AI SEO periodic table: 55 terms, explained simply

By Indraa Kumar D | Published 23 July 2026 | Interactive glossary

AI search arrived with a whole new vocabulary, and most of it is jargon standing in front of a simple idea. Here is the entire vocabulary in one place, grouped into eight families and explained in one plain line each. Tap any term to see what it means.

You do not need to memorise this. You need to recognise it, so that the next time an agency or a LinkedIn post throws AEO, GEO, LLMO and RAG at you in one breath, you can tell the substance from the alphabet soup. That is the whole point of the table.

Tap or hover any term below to see what it means.

Why this exists

For twenty years, being found meant one thing: rank on Google. That has split into three overlapping jobs. Rank in traditional search. Be the answer an engine reads out. Be the source an AI decides to cite. Each job brought its own acronyms, and the noise now hides how simple the underlying shift really is.

The gap that is widening fastest is not between good and bad marketing. It is between the brands an AI can find and describe, and the ones it cannot see at all.

If you want the strategy behind these terms rather than the definitions, our AI SEO guide covers how the pieces fit together, and the modern marketing breakdown shows where AI search sits in the wider picture.

Common questions

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is about structuring content so an engine can lift a clean, direct answer from it. Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the broader effort to be surfaced and cited inside generative AI answers. They overlap heavily, and in practice most good work serves both at once.

Is AI SEO replacing traditional SEO?

No, it is layering on top of it. Google still handles the overwhelming majority of searches, and the technical foundations, clean HTML, schema, crawlability, are exactly what AI engines need too. The businesses that win treat it as one discipline, not two competing ones.

Do I need to know all 55 of these terms?

No. You need to recognise them so you are not sold jargon as if it were strategy. The handful that matter most for getting cited by AI are citation, retrieval-augmented generation, schema markup, server-side rendering and entity recognition. The rest is useful context.

How do I know if AI can even read my site?

Run it through our free AI readiness checker. It fetches your page the way an AI crawler would and reports whether your content is visible in the raw HTML, whether your schema is clean, and whether anything is blocking the AI crawlers at the server level.

The idea of laying out AI SEO vocabulary as a periodic table has been going around, credited to Anna York of Citation School. We liked it enough to build our own interactive version from scratch, with our own definitions and categories. The framing is hers, the words here are ours.
