ChatGPT ads cost in India: the Rs 725 minimum, and what a sensible first test really costs.

By Indraa Kumar D | Published 16 October 2026 | 8 min read

Short answer. OpenAI's minimum daily budget for ChatGPT ads billed in rupees is Rs 725, with no contract and no invitation needed. A daily budget is an average over the week, so one day can spend up to twice it. If you want a hard ceiling, set a campaign-total budget instead. Thirty days at the minimum is about Rs 22,000 in ad spend. You pay per 1,000 views or per click, never per conversion.

ChatGPT ads arrived in India quietly and then all at once. Ads started appearing for Indian users in late August 2026, and Indian advertisers could buy them through OpenAI's self-serve Ads Manager from early September. Since then the question I hear most from business owners in Bangalore is not "how does it work". It is "how much will this cost me". So here is the honest answer, in rupees, with a source for every number.

The minimum: Rs 725 a day

OpenAI's help centre lists the minimum daily budget by billing currency, and for rupees it is Rs 725. There is no minimum commitment and no agency requirement. You sign up at ads.openai.com, add a payment method and set a budget. You may have seen Rs 750 quoted in a few early articles; OpenAI's own table says Rs 725. Minimum budgets in other billing currencies, from US dollars to UAE dirhams, are on our ChatGPT ads worldwide page.

Do not mistake the minimum for the default. Agencies that have walked through the India setup report that the campaign wizard can pre-fill a higher daily figure. If you are testing, type your own number.

Two kinds of budget, and why the difference matters

When you create a campaign you choose either a daily budget or a campaign-total budget. Most guides skip this choice. It is the single most important money decision you make.

A daily budget is an average, not a ceiling. OpenAI describes it as the average you want to spend per day over a seven-day period. Actual spend can go above or below it on any day. It will not go above twice your daily budget on a single day, and not above seven times it over the seven-day period. The budget week runs Sunday to Saturday in your account's timezone. So a Rs 725 daily budget can take Rs 1,450 on a busy day, as long as the week stays within about Rs 5,075. If a campaign uses up its weekly allowance early, it can stop delivering until the next week even while it still shows as active.

A campaign-total budget is the hard cap. You set the total you are willing to spend over the whole campaign, and OpenAI calls this the stricter control for total spend. For a business owner who wants to say "I will risk Rs 20,000 on this and not a rupee more", this is the setting. OpenAI suggests new advertisers start on a daily budget so they can watch delivery first. That is sensible if someone is watching every day. If nobody is, use the campaign total. One warning: if you switch a campaign from a campaign-total budget to a daily budget, you cannot switch it back.

How you are charged: views, clicks or conversions

Every campaign has one objective, and the objective decides how you pay. You cannot change it after the campaign is created; you make a new campaign instead.

Inside each ad group you can let the platform get the most results from your budget, which is the default, or set a manual maximum bid. On a channel this young, a manual bid set too low just keeps you out of the auction. Start on the default and move to manual once you know what a click is worth to you.

What does a click actually cost in India?

Honestly, nobody can tell you yet. OpenAI publishes no benchmark, the auction is weeks old in India, and the few numbers circulating come from single campaigns over a few days. Any agency quoting you a firm cost per lead for ChatGPT ads today is guessing. Prices in a new auction also tend to rise as more advertisers arrive.

So I do not plan a test around a predicted click price. I plan it so that it still makes sense if clicks turn out more expensive than you hoped, and I let your own first week of data set the real number.

So what should a first test cost?

I size a first ChatGPT ads test from the other end: what is one good enquiry worth to you? A Bangalore coding school that earns, say, Rs 40,000 from a student can afford to pay far more for an enquiry than a cafe that earns Rs 400 from a customer. Then I ask how many enquiries you would need to see before you believed the result. The test budget is whatever buys that many chances, capped at what you are prepared to lose.

For many Bangalore B2B, education and real estate businesses, 30 days at or a little above the Rs 725 minimum is enough to learn whether the channel produces real enquiries at all. A bigger daily budget gives you a faster read if you have it. But a disciplined small test beats a hopeful large one on a channel with no history. You can always scale a test that works. You cannot get back a budget spent learning nothing.

Three things decide whether that money teaches you anything:

  1. Tracking before launch. OpenAI's conversion measurement on your site, tagged links so your own analytics shows what came from ChatGPT, and a way to count enquiries that arrive by phone or WhatsApp.
  2. A pass mark agreed in advance. For example: at least five genuine enquiries at under a set cost each, by day 30.
  3. A review date. On that date you scale, change or stop. Stopping is a valid result.

ChatGPT Ads vs Google Ads

The question behind the question is usually "will this cost less than Google?" It is the wrong comparison, and here is why. A Google Search click comes from someone typing exactly what you sell, right now. A ChatGPT click comes from someone in the middle of a longer conversation, and only from people who can see ads: Free and Go plan users and logged-out visitors. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users never see ads.

So a lower cost per click is not automatically a lower cost per customer. The fair comparison is cost per genuine enquiry, measured the same way on both channels over the same weeks. That is exactly what a capped test gives you. For most businesses Google Ads stays the core, and ChatGPT ads is a measured experiment alongside it, at least until the channel has a track record.

And ChatGPT ads vs Meta ads?

Facebook and Instagram ads interrupt someone scrolling and create demand they did not know they had. ChatGPT ads sit under an answer to a question the person chose to ask, so the intent is closer to search than to social. Meta still wins on reach, visual formats and years of audience data; ChatGPT ads may win on the moment, when someone is actively deciding. If you already run Meta, a capped ChatGPT test sits beside it, not instead of it, and the same rule applies: compare cost per genuine enquiry, not cost per click.

What an agency charges, separately

Everything above is what OpenAI charges you, from your own card, on your own account. If you hire an agency, its fee is a separate line and should never be mixed into your ad spend. At Apex Influence the fit check is free, and management is a monthly fee given in writing before launch. We never hold or mark up your ad spend. You can read how we run a test on our ChatGPT ads agency in Bangalore page, or nationally on ChatGPT ads agency and consulting in India.

Want a second pair of eyes before you spend? We run free ChatGPT ads fit checks for Bangalore businesses, with founder Indraa Kumar D on the call. You get a written test plan with a capped budget and a review date, on your own account.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum budget for ChatGPT ads in India?

Rs 725 a day, according to OpenAI's minimum campaign spend table for accounts billed in rupees. There is no minimum commitment or contract.

Can ChatGPT ads spend more than my daily budget?

Yes, on individual days. A daily budget is an average over a seven-day period: one day can spend up to twice it, and the seven-day period cannot exceed seven times it. For a hard ceiling, use a campaign-total budget, which OpenAI calls the stricter control for total spend.

Do I pay per conversion on ChatGPT ads?

No. You pay per 1,000 impressions or per valid click. Even a conversion-optimised campaign is billed per click or per 1,000 impressions; OpenAI states that you do not pay per conversion.

How much does a click cost on ChatGPT ads in India?

There is no official benchmark yet, and the auction is only weeks old. Plan a first test so it still works if clicks cost more than you hoped, and let your own first week of data set the real figure.

Do ChatGPT ads cost less than Google Ads?

Sometimes per click, but the two are not equivalent. Google reaches people typing what you sell; ChatGPT ads reach Free and Go plan users and logged-out visitors mid-conversation. Compare cost per genuine enquiry over the same period, not cost per click.

How much should I spend on my first ChatGPT ads test?

Enough to see a readable number of enquiries, and no more than you are prepared to lose. For many Bangalore businesses that is 30 days at or a little above the Rs 725 minimum, with tracking in place before launch and a pass mark agreed in advance.

Does an agency fee include the ad spend?

It should not. Ad spend is paid to OpenAI from your own card on your own account. An agency fee is a separate line. At Apex Influence the fit check is free and management is a monthly fee given in writing before launch.
